Mitch Utterback is a retired U.S. Army Special Forces lieutenant colonel and a retired Colorado National Guard soldier. After receiving his commission and bachelor's degree from San Diego State University, Mitch returned to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina to attend the Special Forces officer qualification course. As a Special Forces officer, Mitch served in the 19th Special Forces Group in the California and Colorado National Guard. He deployed three times to Afghanistan and once to Iraq. He also commanded a unit along the U.S. border with Mexico that supported interagency counter narcotics smuggling efforts.

Mitch retired in 2015 as a lieutenant colonel with 20 years of active federal service and 33 years of total service in the active and the reserve components. He's still active in disaster response as a member of an incident management team. He's a military analyst on television and radio, a freelance writer, and even traveled to Mosul, Iraq on his own in late 2016 to reunite with the same Iraqi officers he advised while in uniform.

Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Utterback has a master's in homeland security from San Diego State University and a master's in journalism from the University of Colorado - Boulder. He lives in Boulder, Colorado.
